Āhuru Mōwai, operated by Whatever It Takes Trust, was nominated in the Team’s category for the significant impact it has had supporting chronically homeless men into housing, improving their wellbeing and focusing on recovery.

Sam Aberahama, chief executive of Whatever It Takes Trust, said the team was thrilled to have had their work recognised through this award.

“Many of the men who seek support from the night shelter are chronically homeless and need the safe and supportive environment Āhuru Mōwai provides. Our team brings lived experience to their work, and their approach is successfully supporting men to make life-changing steps forward.”

Since opening in June 2025, Āhuru Mōwai has helped 12 men move into housing and begin their road to recovery with the ongoing support of Whatever it Takes Trust.

Irihāpeti Mahuika, Health Hawke’s Bay the Primary Health Organisation’s chief executive, who supported the Hawke’s Bay Faculty of the Royal Collage of General Practice’s Primary care awards, said the recognition was well deserved.

“The team at Whatever It Takes Trust goes above and beyond every day for their clients. These award winners were recognised by the community for their work and nominated by their peers, which makes the acknowledgement very special.”
